Get To Know Capt. John G. Peterlin, III

What in your life drew you to your current field of study?

I did not originally pursue a career in the maritime industry. I would say it was incidental to my chasing something else - aviation. My father was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and I wanted to be a pilot. While trying to be able to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy, I received an appointment to the federal maritime academy. Once I had the opportunity to sail overseas as a cadet in a commercial training berth in the U.S. flag merchant marine fleet I was hooked and never looked back. However, one must wonder about fate or predestiny because, looking back, many things I was exposed to in my youth had some maritime theme.

What do you hope your students gain from studying or working with you?

I hope they will recognize my enthusiasm and passion for the maritime industry and be inspired to persevere in their pursuit of the profession. I also hope my enthusiasm for meteorology will also excite them and motivate them to learn to become more attuned to and aware of their environment. I would like them to gain an appreciation of the rich history and heritage of the industry they are studying and working to enter, an appreciation of how dynamic and interesting it is, and how it can provide them a good living and a life-long career.

What are you passionate about in your personal life?

Maritime History, Sail Training & Tall Ship sailing - I have been a Volunteer since 2007 on the Historic 1877 Barque SSV ELISSA at the Galveston Historic Seaport (formerly known as the Texas Seaport Museum). Continuing important maritime traditions and recognizing American Merchant Marine Veterans with the annual National Maritime Day Commemoration Ceremony on the Galveston waterfront. Also music, particularly traditional fiddle music.
